spends in shopping

Who spends more in shopping? Men or Women?

What if he's not talking about any specific items? In other words, what if he's asking a very generalized question?

Collectively, men may spend more over the course of their lifetime when it comes to contraptions with motors, and women may spend more over the course of their lifetime when it comes to household goods, but if we were to consider all categories (regardless of how they were categorized so long as they are collectively exhaustive); who then spends more in shopping, men or women? If that's the question, then ... .

At any rate, I still think a very good point has been brought up by both yourself and Coaster. It's almost always a good idea to examine the question.

Hmmm. I don't know, but I'd guess that women do, but that may be more a function of the greater number times they go shopping than men (another assumption). I'd hazard a guess (and that's all it is--just a guess) that men would spend more than women if men shopped as often.
